A root canal is the process of saving a tooth. The nerve and blood vessel (pulp tissue) in the center of the tooth is removed. The center is sterilized. The center is filled with an accepted inert root canal filling (gutta percha). POINT: The roots are not removed; the roots hold the tooth in place. The nerve tissue or pulp is removed.
